Great Design Portfolios

May 30th, 2008

This is a great example of how a graphic design portfolio should be.

I came across this page just while i was bored one night and did some stumbling. I absolutley love it. Designers always talk about “how we can keep people on the page without leaving after they land”..well this is one of them. Every part of this page made me want to stay and made me want to come back for more.

The site is completley designed in flash and is kept interesting by dave who places videos all over ths site. I feel by him standing there explaining there it gives you the feeling of knowing exactly what hes talking about, gives a wamr feeling to the site. The site has this great movie feel and throughout the site there is music being played!

This is another great example of the power of flash. I cam across this site via stumbleupon and i love when i do. these sites feel so real, they feel like you are actually watching things move live around the page. This site was also set up for a good cause which you can read about on the site itself.

Amy Winehouse Dies at 25

May 24th, 2008

Thats the title we could be hearing in the next few weeks according to the doctors that are treating her in a local London Hospital. LIMP Amy Winehouse was dragged through an A&E unit’s double doors before collapsing from a huge drug overdose yesterday.

The semi-conscious singer was hauled in by husband Blake Fielder-Civil and a girl pal. When she reached the reception desk, her legs buckled and she fell to the floor with a shriek. The party-loving star’s trademark beehive hair hung lank around her shoulders as staff at London’s University College Hospital rushed her for emergency treatment.

Tattooed Amy, whose stick-thin frame and sallow complexion has worried friends and fans alike, was given an adrenaline shot in the early hours drama. And she had her stomach pumped.

We are watching the death of a young girl live on TV people.

Going to the toilet in a Cafe

May 14th, 2008
What do do?

What do do?

I love internet cafes. Given that my job requires hours of sitting and typing, sitting and drawing, or sitting and procrastinating, a change of scenery is welcome, allowing me to be around people without actually having to interact with them, listen to them or acknowledge their existence beyond sharing a power outlet. To me, a cafe is like a large desktop image that dispenses caffeinated beverages and scones.

However, as any science-fiction writer can tell you, with any new technology come new problems and new sex acts. I haven’t gotten to the sex act part yet, but the problem is quite apparent: What do I do with my laptop when I have to use the bathroom?

Solution 1: Leave it there on the table

Yeah, great idea. I’ll just throw my credit cards and loose change on the table, too, maybe carve my Social Security number and bank password into the wood to maximize the convenience of anyone who wants to ruin my life.

Solution 2: Ask the person next to me to keep an eye it

It’s not that I think the guy next to me is going to steal my laptop — he’s already got one, and his is generally nicer — it’s just that I don’t think he’s going to do a damn thing if a desperate-looking hood and/or thug walks right up and grabs my iBook. Hell, if he’s like me, he won’t even notice. If I were the sort of person who paid attention to his surroundings, I wouldn’t be bringing a laptop into public spaces.

Solution 3: Bring it in with me

The easiest thing would be just to tuck it under my arm and head to the head. And yet … I feel like that raises questions. “Why is he bringing a laptop into the bathroom? Has he been overwhelmed by the erotic power of superheroine porn? Is this some sort of sick YouTube stunt? Who said he could do that? Why won’t somebody stop him?” I don’t trust people to say one word if a pod of roving computer thieves leaps from a running van and grabs my laptop, but I’m sure someone will tackle me at the knees to prevent me from carrying it into the john.

Solution 4: Bring everything in with me

OK, this doesn’t even make sense to me, but here’s what I often do: I put my laptop back into my satchel, put my iPod back into my coat and bring my entire life with me into the bathroom. I don’t know why I feel this is more socially acceptable. What do I want them to think is in there? A makeup case? A wide selection of hygiene products? Maybe I’m trying to fool them into thinking I’m just stopping by the men’s room on the way out. If so, it works, because I generally come back to find my coffee cup in the bus bin and my seat taken.

Solution 5: Lock the thing up

I haven’t tried this, but it would be the very avatar of simplicity to get one of those laptop locks and attach my laptop to the table or chair. I’m reluctant, though, because I don’t want to come across as one of those twitchy people who obsess about extremely unlikely crimes and devise elaborate schemes to foil largely fictional criminals. However, looking back over this, I guess I am one of those people. I should probably just blog from an underground bunker in rural Montana, pausing every three paragraphs to re-oil my shotgun. I’d probably get more work done.

“Lore Sjöberg has written a great article about what to do with your laptop when you need to go to the toilet in a cafe, very very funny.”

we shall say hello to pastures new and green

May 10th, 2008

Hey Everyone, young, old, new, and friends, family, people i know and dont know, helllooooooo.

It has been a while again since the last time we had the chance to talk. Things have been crazy like they always are here, but this time the university time has ended and we shall be moving onto pastures new and green. Its exam time yeahhhhhh, hmm not really, so i have got my head in the books and will have for the next few weeks. So far as i write this today i have written one of them and have another five to go :( I feel like the first one went very well, it wasnt that it was hard, there just was so much content and so little time in which to do it. I have to say that i used every last second on the three hours and was glad i did. My teacher at the end let me know that things should be ok for this module as i had done really well in coursework and homework assignments so that was a relief. The type of work that we did for the exam we did a hundred times at home, but its when you sitting in that room, that you feel the weight of pressure over your head. So anyways enough of that boring boring topic, wish me luck though for the next exams ;)

What have i been doing in my spare time? hmm to be honest not really that much, like i explained with the exams, i have been at home most of the time studying. The weather here for the last week has been unbelievable, so warm and sunny, i even got new sunglasses and its horrible when you have to sit inside and watch all the other people having fun. People are having barbecues, getting really drunk and just sitting in the sun, apart from the drinking i wouldnt mind doing the rest. Every wednesday we are still going bowling. Alot of the people that come with us will be moving on also very soon. Its sad, as i have had a lot of fun with these people over the last year. I have made great friends and unfortunatley, due to geography, we wont be seeing much of each other for a while. But whats that old saying, you will always meet each other twice in a life-time.

Id love to be spending more time on the small things that really get my mind going, designing things like websites/blogs etc but due to the lack of time that will not be happening for a while. After the exams though i will be creating my first proper website made completley out of pure HTML, for the people who doing know what that it you can read a little bit about it here. I have decided that it will become a sort of new project to fight the boredom in the summer. I think the site will be based around the idea of Forensics but im not quite sure yet. I have already got the domain/URL : nakedbones.net Whatever happens it will be released around the time i start university again, so september sometime. It will be a bit of a challenge but thats the whole fun about it.

Everyone, where ever you may be in the world, thank you for reading and i hope that we see each other very soon, there are a lot of people i would love to sit and have a chat with ;)
